Which Smart Lock Fits Your Door? Aluminium, Glass or Wood

Choosing a smart lock for your door type starts with the door itself: its material, the lock body inside it and the way it closes. Here is which Spark lock family fits each door, and what to measure before you buy.

Spark SL 250 Outside

The short answer

Choose by door type. Security doors with a 6068 lock body take the Spark SL family, such as the Spark SL-250 with face and palm recognition, a camera and IP68 protection. 85-series doors with three locking points take TL locks like the Spark TL-250. Glass doors take the GL-50, aluminium doors the slim AL-50, wooden doors the WL models.

Why your door decides which smart lock fits

A smart lock is not one size fits all, because each door holds a lock in its own way. Check three things before you compare cameras or fingerprint sensors:

  • Material and type. Security, 85-series, glass, aluminium and wooden doors each have their own family in the Spark smart locks range.
  • Lock body. Every Spark lock except the glass-door model fits a mortise lock body, the metal case set into the door edge. Its code holds two measurements: 6068 means a 60 mm backset and 68 mm between the handle spindle and the cylinder.
  • Thickness and space. The SL, TL, AL and WL locks have a panel on each face of the door, 268 mm to 447 mm tall. Door thickness is not listed in the specifications, so ask a Spark partner to confirm it.

Security door smart lock: the SL family for front doors

Steel security doors are a common choice for apartment and villa entrances in Jordan, and the SL family is built for them. Every SL lock fits the 6068 mortise lock body: a 60 mm backset, 68 mm between the handle spindle and the cylinder, and a faceplate 24, 30 or 40 mm wide and 240 mm long. Three models cover the range:

  • Spark SL-100: a lever lock that opens with a fingerprint, code, card or app and runs on 4 × AA dry batteries. Choose the Tuya Wi-Fi or TTLock version to match the app you use.
  • Spark SL-160: fully automatic, adding face and palm recognition, with a camera in the outside panel for video calls on the inside screen or your phone.
  • Spark SL-250: the same six methods and camera, plus IP68 water resistance, dust-tight protection and Alexa support. Its outside panel is 399 × 69 × 22 mm, in black or silver.

On the automatic models, once you are verified, the motor retracts the bolts and you push the door to enter; there is no handle to turn. They run on a 5000 mAh lithium battery.

Smart lock for 85-series doors with three locking points

Some front doors lock at three points at once: top, middle and bottom. The TL family is made for these 85-series doors, which have 85 mm between the handle spindle and the cylinder. Once you are verified, the motor opens the lock, and on a compatible door the three points work together.

Every TL lock has a built-in camera, face recognition, video calls to your phone and a 5000 mAh lithium battery. Check which lock body your door has, because the backsets differ:

  • Spark TL-250: six unlocking methods including palm, for the 6085 lock body with a 60 mm backset. Rated IP65, dust-tight.
  • Spark TL-220: five unlocking methods including face, for the 3585 lock body with a 35 mm backset. Rated IP67, dust-tight.

Smart lock for a glass door: the GL-50

A glass door cannot take a lock body cut into its edge, so the Spark GL-50 mounts on the glass. Its 170 × 70 mm lock unit sits on the door edge, a strike bar goes on the fixed glass beside it, and a hook locking tongue crosses the gap to hold the door shut. That gap must be 5 mm (0.5 cm).

You open it with a fingerprint on the sensor at the bottom of the lock, a code, an IC card or the Tuya Smart app, with a mechanical key as a backup. It runs on 4 × AA dry batteries, and the app alerts you when they run low.

Smart lock for an aluminium door: the slim AL-50

The Spark AL-50 is the slim smart lever lock Spark makes for aluminium doors, with 350 × 39 mm aluminium-alloy panels inside and out and a mortise lock body in the door edge.

It is rated IPX5, with protection against water jets, for doors exposed to rain and splashes. It opens with a fingerprint on the sensor in the handle, a code, an IC card or the Tuya Smart app, keeps a mechanical key as a backup and runs on 4 × AA dry batteries. Ask a Spark partner to confirm it suits your door's lock body.

Smart lock for a wooden door: the WL family

The WL family is made for wooden doors, with five lock body sizes to match the door you already have. The Spark WL-100 is a smart lever handle with 268 × 61 mm aluminium-alloy panels and a choice of 40, 45, 50, 60 or 70 mm backset, measured from the door edge to the centre of the cylinder hole. Every option shares an 85 mm centre distance and a 22 × 240 mm faceplate.

Like the other WL models, the WL-100 opens with a fingerprint, a code, an IC card or the Tuya Smart app, keeps a mechanical key as a backup and runs on 4 × AA dry batteries.

Which unlock method suits you

  • Fingerprint: on every model, so every Spark lock is a fingerprint door lock, with the sensor in the handle on lever locks and at the bottom of GL-50.
  • Face recognition: look at the camera to open. Every camera model has it, including SL-160, SL-250, TL-220 and TL-250.
  • Palm recognition: touch-free verification on six-method models such as SL-160, SL-250 and TL-250.
  • Code and card: on every model, useful for family members and visitors.
  • App: every model is available with Tuya Wi-Fi and the Tuya Smart app, and SL-100 also comes in a TTLock version. SL-250 also works with Alexa.
  • Mechanical key: a backup on every model.

Batteries, Type-C emergency power and the key

SL-100, GL-50, AL-50 and the WL models run on 4 × AA dry batteries, and the AL-50, GL-50 and WL models send a low-battery alert to the app. The automatic SL and TL models use a 5000 mAh lithium battery.

If a battery goes flat, connect a power bank to the Type-C port to power the lock for entry, or use the mechanical key. Keep the key and a charged power bank somewhere you can reach from outside, not inside the house.

How to measure your door before you choose a smart lock

  1. 1

    Identify the door

Security, 85-series, glass, aluminium or wood: the type alone points you to SL, TL, GL, AL or WL.

  2. 2

    Count the locking points

Turn the key and watch the door edge. Bolts at the top, middle and bottom mean a three-point door; with 85 mm between the handle spindle and the cylinder, it takes a TL lock.

  3. 3

    Measure the backset

From the door edge to the centre of the cylinder hole: 60 mm for SL locks and TL-250, 35 mm for TL-220, and 40, 45, 50, 60 or 70 mm for WL locks.

  4. 4

    Measure the centre distance

From the handle spindle to the cylinder centre: 68 mm for SL locks, 85 mm for TL and WL locks.

  5. 5

    Check the faceplate

The plate on the door edge is 24, 30 or 40 mm wide and 240 mm long for SL locks, and 22 × 240 mm for WL locks.

  6. 6

    Check the panel space

Each face of the door needs room for a panel: SL-250, for example, is 399 × 69 × 22 mm outside and 420 × 69 × 49 mm inside. A glass door needs the 5 mm gap for GL-50.

  7. 7

    Confirm with a Spark partner

Share photos and measurements with a Spark partner to confirm the fit, the door thickness and the installation.

Questions people ask about smart door locks

What is the best smart lock for a front door?

The one made for your door. For a security front door that faces the weather, the Spark SL-250 is the most complete: six unlocking methods, a camera, automatic opening and an IP68 rating. For a three-point door, look at TL-250 or the IP67-rated TL-220.

Does a smart door lock need internet?

Not for everyday entry: you use your fingerprint, face, palm, code or card at the lock itself, with the key as a backup. Your home Wi-Fi and internet serve the app side: unlocking from the Tuya Smart app, video calls to your phone and live view on camera models, and Alexa on SL-250. See also smart switches that work without internet.

Is there a smart lock with a camera?

Yes. Every TL model and every SL model except SL-100 has a camera in the outside panel, with video calls on your phone (SL models also on the inside screen) and live view in the Tuya app. For a villa gate or a building entrance, compare video intercoms for villas and apartment buildings.

Can I put a smart lock on an aluminium door?

Yes. The Spark AL-50 is made for aluminium doors: a slim smart lever lock with a mortise lock body in the door edge, rated IPX5. Ask a Spark partner to confirm it suits your door's lock body.

Are Spark locks Tuya smart locks?

Yes. Every Spark lock is available with Tuya Wi-Fi and works with the Tuya Smart app. The SL-100 also comes in a TTLock version if you prefer that app.
